These two get compared a lot because both give a seamless, hand-applied, modern surface with no joins. The difference is what they are made of, and that decides where each one works best.
Venetian plaster
Venetian plaster is lime-based. It is warm, it has a natural depth and movement, and at a high polish it takes on a marble-like glow. It is primarily a wall finish, ideal for feature walls, entries, living areas and ceilings where you want craft and character. It is beautiful, but it is not the first choice for a shower floor or a heavily used wet area unless carefully specified and sealed.
Microcement
Microcement is a thin cement-based coating that bonds to almost any sound surface. Its big advantage is versatility: it goes on walls and floors, and when the right system and sealers are used it handles wet areas, bathrooms, splashbacks and even benchtops. The look is more contemporary and more uniform, a soft concrete surface rather than the layered depth of lime. It is also hard-wearing, which is why it suits floors and high-traffic spaces.

Which should you choose?
- Feature wall, entry or formal room? Venetian plaster, for warmth and depth.
- Floor, bathroom, wet area or benchtop? Microcement, for its durability and water resistance when correctly sealed.
- Want the surface to feel crafted and layered? Venetian plaster.
- Want a seamless, modern concrete look across walls and floors? Microcement.
In a lot of homes the answer is both, used where each one is strongest, which is exactly the kind of thing worth talking through on site.
